How Do I Find the Right Wedding Celebrant in Sydney?

A slightly unhinged but extremely helpful guide

So you’ve found the love of your life. You’ve locked in the venue, the flowers, the outfit that makes your mum cry. But now, the Sydney wedding celebrant? Oh boy. Time to pick the person who’s literally going to talk you into marriage. No pressure!

Let’s break it down. Sydney Marriage Celebrants come in all shapes and sizes and there is someone for everyone but here’s how I would choose someone who’ll make your ceremony amazing — without sounding like a Telstra robot or going rogue with interpretive dance or starting your ceremony with, "can you all hear me!"

  1. Do They Speak Fluent Human?

Your celebrant is the voice of your wedding. If they speak like they’ve swallowed a law textbook (or worse, a motivational podcast), run. You want a human. A warm, funny, professional legend who can read a room and pronounce “love” without sounding like it’s in quotation marks. A story teller or the person who can tell an actual joke with timing and a funny punchline. They should have video on their website of them in action — if they don’t, there is a reason, and it ain't good.

Pro Tip:

Look for someone who’s been described as a fun wedding MC in Sydney without any follow-up lawsuits.

  1. Not All Heroes Wear Capes (Some Wear Lapel Mics)

The right celebrant won’t just turn up and talk — they’ll run the show and coordinate like a boss. We're talking timeline whisperer, vow coach, and crowd charmer. Can relate with both nan and your loose cousin Andy. This person is the Gandalf of your ceremony. You shall not pass… without signing the forms correctly.

Pro Tip:

Ask yourself: can they handle a groomsman fainting mid-vow? Or a toddler heckling from row two? If yes, you’ve got a winner.

  1. Check the Vibe (Seriously)

Some celebrants sparkle. Some… give off “public servant on day 472” energy, some think they are the show and some don’t wear pants (yes seriously). You want sparkle. Meet them, Zoom them, stalk their Instagram, check out who has tagged them, use the intensity of a single bridesmaid 7 Proseccos deep on the dance floor at 10:55pm.

Pro Tip:

Find someone who gets your humour, your story, and the fact that your dog will be walking you down the aisle. If you wouldn’t have a beer with them, you have your answer.

  1. Reviews Are Your Crystal Ball

A celebrant with rave reviews? Love it. A celebrant with one review from “Mum”? Not so much.

Search for real feedback from real couples who say things like, “They made us laugh, cry, and they thought he was our mate.” Bonus points for testimonials that mention “unforgettable,” “warm,” “sexy" or “my dad hugged him harder than he hugged me.”

Expert Tip:

DM a couple from your celebrant’s Insta page, get the dirt.

5. Legal Schmiegel — But Actually Very Important

Turns out, that marrying someone is technically a legal process. Who knew?

You want a celebrant who knows the Marriage Act better than they know their Netflix password. Forms done right = less stress = more champagne = legally married.

  1. Book Early or Cry Later

Look, the good ones book out faster than you can say “wedding season.” And there are only so many Saturdays in a week. If you’ve found a celebrant who’s charming, confident, and hasn’t compared marriage to jail time or does a full production to your guests on how to not use your phones during the ceremony — LOCK 🔒 THEM 🔒 IN. Your guests (and your future married self) will thank you.

Bonus Round: Who’s This Gary Guy?

Oh hey, since you’re here and read this far through — meet Gary Reilly, the Sydney marriage celebrant you didn’t know you needed. Equal parts professional and personable, with 15 years experience and still young enough to tell the story, Gary has performed ceremonies that have made grown men weep (in a good way) and good girls go bad.

Also? He’s a fun wedding MC in Sydney and coordinator who’ll keep your party rolling on time without stealing the spotlight or the cake. (the cake bit is a lie)
